Make the energy transition more equitable and possible
Dr. David Konisky, O'Neill School
Dr. Konisky studies U.S. environmental policy and politics, with particular emphasis on environmental and energy justice, regulation, federalism, and public opinion. He's especially interested in making the clean energy transition equitable, considering how energy and environmental policies affect disadvantaged and low-income communities.
He co-directs the Energy Justice Lab, a research collaboration between IU and UPenn where faculty and students focus on the social and environmental effects of the energy transition. They aim to inform policies that make the transition fair and beneficial for all.
Among many other climate justice issues, the team considers household energy insecurity and advocates for protecting residents from shutoffs during extreme heat. To that end, they created the Utility Disconnection Dashboard. They also have studied making electric cars more accessible for low-income groups. They've also published on environmental justice questions that stem from real-world policies, including the Green New Deal, Justice40, and state and local policies. He also leads IU's Environmental Justice Fellows program.
In the last 5 years, Dr. Konisky's work has been cited nearly 5,000 times. It's been published in journals that include the American Journal of Political Science, Climatic Change, Environmental Research Letters, Global Environmental Change, the Journal of Policy Analysis and Management, the Journal of Politics, and Nature Energy, among others. His research has been supported by the NSF, the McKinney Family Foundation, the EPA, and the Department of Energy, to name a few.
The author or editor of six books on environmental policy and politics, he also serves as the editor-in-chief of Environmental Politics. He holds the Lynton K. Caldwell professorship at the O'Neill School.
