Indiana University student Josie Sparks, with a dual degree in Environmental and Sustainability Studies from the O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs and in History from the College of Arts and Sciences, earned the 2024–2025 Sam Burgess Undergraduate Research Award for her work on the complex relationship between preservation and commercialization in U.S. national parks like Crater Lake, Mount Rainier, and Glacier National Park.

IU will honor two of campus' environmental leaders with Staff Merit Awards: Michael Chitwood, property manager of the Research and Teaching Preserve, and Michelle Bartley-Taylor, director of the Center of Excellence for Women & Technology. Chitwood manages over 1,600 acres of natural preserves and mentored and guided dozens of students. Bartley-Taylor helped transform the idea for a sustainability and technology alliance into a thriving student program.
