Is it for you?
The BSES program attracts students from a variety of backgrounds and interests, but they typically have some of the following qualities:
- an interest in the scientific principles and technical skills needed to address complex environmental systems
- a genuine passion and concern for the environment, including ecological issues, conservation, and sustainability
- an awareness of how environmental issues intersect with social, ethical, and economical shifts
- comfortable with lab and fieldwork, in addition to analytical and quantitative thinking

IU offers a wide range of environmental scholarships and research opportunities - these are only a from ESSI:
Sustainability Scholars
Conduct sustainability research for one year alongside an IU faculty member. Scholars also take a 2-credit hour research methods course, and are given a $500 scholarship each semester.
McKinney Climate Fellows
A paid workforce development program focused on climate, sustainability, and community resilience. Administered by the Environmental Resilience Institute with support from ESSI.
Sustainability Research Development Grant
Supports collaborative, interdisciplinary efforts of students to develop new, externally-funded research related to sustainability, such as resource stewardship, assessment and mitigation of environmental impacts caused by human activity.
