The Environment, Society, and Sustainability Institute at Indiana University is dedicated to understanding and addressing the environmental challenges facing our world. A core part of our mission is service to Hoosiers—especially by helping high school students explore the importance of the environment and sustainability. Through our pre-college programs, ESSI connects students and educators with Indiana University students, faculty, and facilities to experience what environmental study and research look like at the university level. In addition to the knowledge and experience gained by participating in ESSI’s pre-college programs, students also demonstrate their passion for and commitment to the environment during their time in high school. As they apply for undergraduate programs and scholarships, students will be able to call on their pre-college experiences with ESSI to demonstrate that they were invested in learning about the environment before going to college. Our programs are designed to spark curiosity, build confidence, and show students how their interests in science and the environment can translate into real academic and career pathways. Whether through virtual learning, immersive campus experiences, or hands-on research exposure, ESSI’s pre-college initiatives aim to inspire the next generation of environmental thinkers and leaders.
